5 man-approved romantic movies for Valentine’s Day

I was about 12 or 13 when I saw my first romantic movie.

My older cousin was visiting from up north and Grandma gave us a couple of dollars to rent a video.

Usually I would have made a beeline for the kids’ section, but on this day the lure of Tom Cruise was too strong. Before you knew it we were trotting back to Grandma’s house with Cocktail in hand.

Grandma had no idea which video we chose probably thinking we rented something PG like Honey, I shrunk the kids. I can still remember her walking into the lounge room right in the middle of the waterfall scene. Cringe.

I have been obsessed with romantic movies ever since.

Luckily for me, Dave doesn’t mind cuddling up on the couch with me and a good romantic movie.

There’s no way in hell he would watch anything like Pride and Prejudice or Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but there are loads of other romantic movies that he doesn’t mind at all.

According to Dave, when it comes to choosing a romantic movie with your man, you have to keep a few things in mind.

‘It has gotta have a hot chick and some classic characters like Swayze in Roadhouse. I really like RoadhouseΒ because he gets it on with the doctor …’ he said.

‘You have to have a good story line with some dust storm moments*.

‘Any sort of period piece or anything old is a no go.’

Check out the list below for Dave’s top five man-approved romantic movies for you to rent with your man this Valentine’s Day.

1.

Can’t Buy Me Love
1987
Patrick Dempsey, Amanda Peterson, Seth Green

This angsty teen movie is full of crimped hair and MC Hammer pants. If anything, you need to watch it just to check out a very young Patrick Dempsey’s hair. Dave loves this movie so much he owns it on DVD and allegedly took inspiration from it for some of our first dates.

Watch the trailer:

2.

Before Sunrise
1995
Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy

This is one of those movies that will stick with you long after it’s finished. A chance encounter between an American guy and a French girl leads them to spend a night together exploring Vienna and baring their souls about love and life. It sounds a little soppy, but it’s thought-provoking and real to life.

Watch the trailer:

3.

Jerry Macguire

1996
Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger

If you haven’t seen this movie before, where have you been? As far as Dave’s concerned, this romantic movie has it all – an awesome soundtrack, a hot chick, drama, laughs, and plenty of dust storm moments*.

Watch the trailer:

4.

The Notebook

2004
Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams

It wouldn’t be a romantic movie list without The Notebook. This is a classic story about young love between a couple from two very different worlds. There are plenty of dust storm moments* in this one and plenty of eye candy too!

Watch the trailer:

5.

50 First Dates

2004
Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore

50 First Dates tells the tale of Sea Life Park vet Henry, who falls hard for local, Lucy. The only problem is Lucy has an unusual form of short-term memory loss. Every day Henry goes to hilarious lengths to get Lucy to fall in love with him over and over again.

If none of Dave’s top picks grab you, then my sweets and dessert-crazed friends at Shari’s Berries can help you out with their super cool What romantic movie should you watch? flowchart. Serious fun!

It’s jam-packed with an amazing collection of movies and helps you to choose a romantic movie based on who you’re watching it with and your current mood.

Check it out and see what movie you come up with.

Do you watch romantic movies with your other half? Which ones would you or your partner add to Dave’s list? What is your man’s criteria for a good romantic movie?

* Dust storm moment is a phrase Dave coined to explain in a manly way that the movie has made him a tad teary. His will squint his eyes and blink as if he’s just walked into a dust storm.

Hehe I loved reading about your Cocktail adventure with your cousin, I can’t remember watching that movie from start to finish so must add it to the list, don’t mind me a bit of the old Tom Cruise, am a Top Gun fan, never gets old!

Have to show these to my David. He’s a bit of a romance movie fan:) His fav is Sleepless in Seattle, then again he loves anything with Meg Ryan (bit of a fan there;) incl You’ve Got Mail. My fav that he also likes is While you were sleeping, oh and new fav is Lake House. But absolute fav is Return to Me. Oh and best about these movies is they have been suitable for our 13yr old to watch. She is longing to watch older movies but not quite ready for anything too adult yet. off to check your recs or rather Dave’s

I have to say I’m a Meg Ryan fan too. I love that French Kiss movie and there’s a couple of others I used to love but just can’t think of their names now. While you were sleeping is definitely a classic. Actually that’s not a bad one to dig out and watch again πŸ™‚

Great list. It’s been ages since we had a movie night in. We tend to get a lot of invites to movie previews. Some are better than others and there has been a good mix to keep both of us happy most of the time.

I think I will have to watch the Notebook. I’ve avoided it for some time but everyone keeps telling me I won’t “get” Ryan Gosling until I do! Great selection! I’d add Dirty Dancing- my husband likes some of the old 50’s rock πŸ™‚

I’m struggling to get my hubby to take me on a date let alone watch a movie with me. lol. The triathlon forces are too strong. ha ha ha. Hubby loves a good action/sci-fi flick. I just loathe movies altogether. Always have. I think it’s got something to do with not being able to sit still. I am keen to see that naughty Fifty Shades movie. Do you think I could take it?? I’ll tell him it’s a sci-fi.:)

I haven’t watched the first two on your list so will have to get a hold of them and especially love 4 & 5. Hubby and my favourite rom com would be an old movie called ‘Always’ (1989) – starring Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter, and funnily enough about fire fighters – the ones who drop in with helicopters over massive forest fires. Also a sucker for Phenomenon (1996) with John Travolta and Kyra Sedgwick. God I’m showing my age with my movie and music taste!

We haven’t watched a movie in ages. I reckon we should watch one this weekend. The Notebook is one of my favourite movies. The first two movies I’ve never heard of so they might be good to check out. I love the Dust Storm phrase. Will tell Jacob about it because he can sometimes tear up in a romantic movie. πŸ™‚

OMG! Hubby and I love, LOVE watching Before Sunrise together! We sat up for hours after discussing it. And the clip you’ve posted is one of my favourite scenes. The other is when they’re listening to that gorgeous song in the booth of the record store. Not an utter of dialogue but that scene spoke in volumes!!!

My partner will happily watch a romantic movie with me, but like your Dave, anything old is a no go. Anything with a bit of adventure or comedy thrown in with the mushy stuff is sure to gain his approval.
I love Shari’s Berries infographic. Thanks for sharing that! πŸ™‚

I do make him watch them with me because I have to watch his zombie/alien/robot movies. We watched The Notebook together and you’re right… he liked it. Me not so much. I adore period romances; anything by Jane Austen or the Brontes but I know he can’t stand them. My favourite romantic movie is First Night with Richard Gere and Sean Connery. There’s enough action for men in it!

I’ve got a man who doesn’t mind a romantic chick flick. For him it’s mostly just about spending time together and enjoying whatever we’re watching. I’ll have to ask him what his recommendation would be for best romantic flick but I would have to say no. 4 & 5 are definitely classics!

“Dust storm” – love it! Handy Hubby would rather poke his eye out with a screwdriver than watch a romantic movie. The only exception is The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates. Something about Adam Sandler. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a romantic guy but we have an arrangement – he doesn’t do romantic movies and I don’t do horror movies. Works well as I get to watch all the romantic ones on girls nights out instead!
