For the past seven days, I have spent every spare second I have learning the lyrics to the Hilltop Hoods’ Cosby Sweater.
‘Why?’ you may ask.
Well, that is a really good question and I wish I knew the answer.
It all started when I saw Emily from Have a laugh on me’s entry into an international lip syncing competition.
‘Bloody hell,’ I thought.
‘That looks like mega fun.
‘I am seriously going to do that.’
I seemingly forgot that I am the shy, retiring type and us folk just never do that sort of thing.
I mentioned the competition to Dave and he was amped to say the least.
‘You should seriously do Cosby Sweater, kid,’ he said.
‘If you learn all of the lyrics, you’ll take out the whole bloody competition.’
Spurred on with Dave’s encouragement, I printed out the lyrics and downloaded the song. While cooking dinner, on the way to work, on the way home from work, at the crack of dawn, late at night in my nightie with no bra on, I’ve been practicing the lyrics and my killer dance moves.
It became my obsession.
I sent numerous text messages to family and friends trying to track down a Cosby Sweater to no avail.
My Aunt, bless her, actually went to four different op shops over the weekend looking for one.
‘My niece is doing this rap for a competition,’ she told one of the shop assistants.
‘She needs to look like one of the Hilltop Hoods. She needs a Cosby Sweater. You know, a coogie. Do you have any coogies for sale?
‘How old is your niece?’ the shop assistant asked.
‘Umm … 37 ..,’ my Aunt replied as she realised everyone in the shop thought she was a live one.
There have been many times during the past week where I’ve been on the verge of quitting.
‘I’m not doing it,’ I whined to Dave.
‘I can’t remember the lyrics. It’s too hard.
‘Why am I even doing this? People will think I’m an absolute mentalist.’
Despite my second thoughts, I powered on like a woman possessed.
On Sunday while Dave worked in the yard and mum looked after the kids, I commenced Project lip sync cosby sweater.
In 32 degree heat, I donned a jumper (the closest I could find to a Cosby Sweater), pulled on my skinny jeans (Do you know how hard it is to get those things on when it’s 32 degrees and you’re a puddle of sweat?) and rapped my little heart out.
I was so freaking hot, if you look closely you can even see sweat on my upper lip.
As I was busting my homie g moves in the kitchen like a crazed lunatic, I realised why I was doing this.
I want to make people smile and give them a laugh. I want to entertain them, especially Eden Riley, the woman behind this competition which she is running in honour of her brother, Cameron.
Those of you who know me well, know that I’m in my element with this competition.
Despite being an introvert, I like to do out there things every now and then. Introverts can do that too, okay. We just make ourselves sick to the stomach about it for days before and after it.
Those who attended our wedding and saw Dave and I do a choreographed routine to Beyonce’s Crazy in love and those who saw me sing Boom shake the room at my brother’s wedding will just think yep, that’s Renee. She’s a little bit loose sometimes, but we love her.
And I hope you love me too.
So … this would be the part where you get to view the clip I worked so hard on, but it appears it has been blocked in Australia due to copyright 🙁 I am attempting to see if there is any way I can fix this, in the meantime thanks for reading!!
(Warning: coarse language.)
Have you ever lip synced before? Are you entering Eden’s competition? If I was to do another entry (I have the bug now) which song would you like me to do?
