wedding dance
Yep, that’s Dave and me getting our Jay Z and Beyonce on at our wedding reception seven years ago (yesterday).

I should mention that Crazy In Love was our ‘bridal waltz’, it was a choreographed routine, and we surprised our guests with it (apart from a handful of people, who I just had to tell). Are you cringing? I am.

Looking back, I don’t know at what point I thought it was a good idea to do a choreographed routine for our wedding dance.

They seemed to be very en vogue circa 2008 and I think I became caught up in the hype.

We’d been deliberating for ages over which song to choose for our bridal waltz. We’re not the waltzy type of people, you see. We’re the kind of people, who like to get on the dance floor and seriously burn it up … and burn it up we did.

When the time came for our waltz, we played Moon River from my favourite movie and did a little bit of casual swaying from side to side. Boring right? Just as our guests were getting ready to join us on the dance floor, the music went scratchy and we faked being shocked that our wedding dance was ruined.

The next thing you know, Crazy In Love cut through the silence and we pumped out the dance moves that we’d been working on for months in the lounge room of our tiny flat.

The crowd went wild, or at least I hope they did. I was too busy making sure the padding in my bra wasn’t popping out while I was doing my uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no nos.

We were definitely crazy in love that night and seven years later, I’d like to think we’re just as crazy in love.

It’s a different kid of crazy in love, of course, from those early days. As busy parents of two young kids, we just don’t have the time that we used to have to spend together.

Conversations are interrupted, date nights are few, and when we do have time together we usually fall asleep on the couch.

This year, Dave took on a massive project at work. It’s a big deal for him and it will most likely be the highlight of his career. I am extremely proud of what he’s created and how dedicated to the project he’s been.

It has meant though that he has been doing crazy hours at work. For the better part of this year, he has worked until 9pm – sometimes even 10pm at night. In the last two months, he’s been working six days a week leaving home before the sun rises and coming home after it sets.

It’s easy to feel like ships in the night, but we’re lucky that we have such a strong bond. We’re lucky that we’re both lighthearted, fun and easy going people, and that we make the most of the small amounts of time we do have together.

We may be ships in the night, we may be exhausted with long hours at work and two little kids under our feet, but we’re happy.

Seven years on from our wedding day, we’re still crazy in love.

I have only ever seen one choreographed dance, early this year. I freaking loved it- I thought it was brilliant and not daggy at all! We danced to Stand By Me by Ben E. King. Just a sway and swirl- we are punk/rockabilly/metal music people so not very waltzy!

Often the times that try us the most, show us the real strength of our love. It’s great that you have this strength and bond Renee. We’ve been through some pretty ugly times where we hit rock bottom and hubby was working long, similar hours, but we made it through.
PS I love choreographed routines – not daggy at all!

Oh I would have loved to have seen your dance! I’m a sucker for any sort of ‘show’

We had Home by Michael Buble. It struck a chord because my husband was in the army at the time and spent most of our time away from me. Luckily he discharged before we had a baby because I can’t imagine doing that with kids. You’re amazing!

Oh I’ve been looking forward to this post all week, after seeing all the little snippets on Facebook. Look at you two strutting your stuff, that’s so awesome! Me and my Dave could never have pulled off anything like that because between us we have four left feet, doh! We danced to Wind Beneath My Wings by Westlife which is uber daggy but the words are just the best. I still get a bit emo when I hear it, I’m such a sap. I’ve just got back from the mother country and my friends surprised me with dinner at our wedding venue – so many feels! Happy Anniversary! Enjoy the loveness xx

2008 sure was the year of the choreographed wedding dance – our’s was too! Our first dance was to ‘I’ll be there’ by Mariah Carey – a shout out to Scott’s Mum who had passed away eight months before her wedding and was the song she chose to have played at her funeral. All of the photos of our wedding dance show me with a face of concentration, I was so nervous about it particularly our grand finale which involved me being lifted up at the end! Happy anniversary guys xx

That is very sweet Renee and the pics are gorgeous. We did our bridal waltz to a classic Van Morrison ‘Have I told you lately that I love you’ and it was just boring old swaying but in the moment you feel like you are the only two people on the planet – at least that’s how I remember it but it was 20 years ago!

Congratulations to you both, Renee. I’m all for the Crazy in Love routine – when else do we ever get the opportunity to make our husbies dance to Beyonce? And learn some actual moves? Crazy indeed. That said, our wedding dance was to ‘That’s Amore’ and we basically just kinda stood in the middle of the dance floor and swayed with the occasional twirl/dip combination. Perfect. x

Gorgeous post! Love this. I wanted to do something silly for our wedding dance – maybe even the chicken dance – but hubby wasn’t having a bar of it. He was very traditional about everything wedding-related, actually. We danced (swayed a bit and snogged, basically) to Lior’s ‘This Old Love’. Then ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ came on and our friends rushed the dancefloor to scream the lyrics with us. Fun.

We had two very good dancer friends do a hilarious self-choregraphed routine at their wedding in 2010. They absolutely rocked it and through in some floor slides and sprinklers and shopping trolleys and big fish little fish cardboard boxes among the actual impressive moves. Hilarious.

You may say “cringe” but I bet the thought of that dance makes you smile every time (do you and Dave remember the moves?!). I do love a good bridal waltz. Music has been such a big thing for Handy Hubby and I. We had so many tunes we wanted to use but they just didn’t seem appropriate for a wedding! In the end we chose Jack Johnson’s ‘Better Together’ as we loved him and the lyrics described us perfectly. I also loved the two songs after our bridal waltz – each of my sister’s bridal waltzes – ‘It Had To Be You’ by Harry Connick Jnr and ‘Heaven (Must Be Missing An Angel)’ by some daggy 70s group. I didn’t tell my sisters I was planning on playing those songs and they got a lovely surprise!

Aw that is a gorgeous surprise. I love that. I love Better Together as well. We had that for one of our key songs. Can’t remember what it was for though. Can’t remember all of the dance moves. Lol. Just a few. CRINGE!!! x

Did you get a video of it?! That would have been special to hold onto! My husband was so nervous on our wedding day he married himself! He said ‘I Hayden, take you Hayden …’ Haha! It broke the ice and got everyone laughing so that was a good thing! He then started swaying and very nearly passed out! Not sure if it was emotion, nerves or ‘What the hell am I doing?!’.

Oh this is so sweet, I love to witness people in love, there is no greater feeling. How lucky your husband is that you are so supportive of his big project, your relationship must be all the stronger for it. Our wedding was only 4 short years ago, we danced to The Best Is Yet To Come, and loved it, I did want to do something with the kids and all dance together, but they wouldn’t be in it. xx

Awww, lovely. I have a few cringe worthy moments from my wedding day too. I had to interrupt one of the speeches as I was BUSTING to go to the toilet. I just couldn’t concentrate on what was being said. Great idea for your dance πŸ™‚

Congratulations on your anniversary. I love the sound of your wedding dance, sounds like so much fun! The ships in the night thing is tough I know it, but sounds like you two are solid which is so lovely. x

Happy Anniversary! What an awesome idea for your bridal waltz, I bet your guests were surprised. We had “Music Box” by Mariah Carey, who was the powerhouse singer back when we got married nearly 19 years ago! We didn’t have anything rehearsed and tried hard not to step on each others feet. πŸ™‚
