Everybody (my blog’s back, alright)

This blog post is brought to you today with much happiness and cheer. In fact, I’m doing the running man right now with a big silly grin on my face. I wish you could see it.

Ahem.

Just three days ago, I was in the depths of despair. Yes, the depths. Prepare yourselves, I’m about to get VERY dramatic.

I thought my blog was dead.

Those of you who are dedicated readers will know that I started to have blog trouble this time last week. Up and down my blog went like a yo-yo. Working one minute and not the next, until it eventually decided to not work at all.

I confided in my father over the weekend that I feared my blog was gone for good. Almost three years of hard work, words, thoughts and love. Gone. I may have been close to tears and talked with a shaky voice.

And you know what he said to me? My dad, who has next to no experience with blogs or WordPress or computers for that matter. He asked me if I had taken a copy of my blog before it went down.

Hmm. The old back up your blog trick. Yeah that.

I’ve been meaning to do that for, um, like three years.

Thankfully, my new host is an absolute genius and was able to restore my blog to its former glory.

I was kind of surprised to get my blog back to be honest and hadn’t prepared a post for today as a result.

One of my friends, the uber-talented Emily Hawker, suggested that today might be a good day to do a song rewrite. That is, take a popular song and rewrite the lyrics. When she suggested the Backstreet Boys, I fell in love with her a little more.

So here it is, my first ever song rewrite in celebration of my blog returning to life.

It’s a little diddy to the tune of Everybody (Backstreet’s Back). I’ve embedded the video below just in case you’ve forgotten the song. I know right? As if you could forget.

Everybody (My blog’s back, alright)

Everybody, yeah
Grab your iPad, yeah
Everybody
Grab your iPhone right
My blog’s back, alright.

Hey, yeah
Oh my god, I’m back again
Bloggers, readers, gather in.
Mummy Wife Me blog’s back right now
For most of last week my blog was down.

Did I lose the plot?
Yeah
Did I go off on one?
Yeah
Was I miserable?
Yeah
To my blog host I did plead.
You better fix my server now

Everybody
Yeah
Did you miss me?
Yeah
Everybody
You all missed me, right?
My blog’s back, alright
Alright

I told my friends it’s just not fair
I have some words that I just wanna share
From the heart will you say a prayer?
If my blog is dead I’ll cry I swear

Was I unintelligible?
Yeah
Did I jump the gun?
Yeah
Was I irritable?
Yeah
A new host and I was freed
I’m gonna rock my blog right now!

Everybody
Yeah
Praise the Lord
Yeah
Everybody
Gonna rock my blog right
My blog’s back, alright
Alright

So bloggers here, bloggers there
Back up your blog, don’t let it disappear
Your blog’s your world, it’s not a one night stand
As long as you back up your blog we’ll all be feeling zen.

Everybody, yeah
Read my blog, yeah
Everybody
Leave a comment right (read my blog right)
Renee’s back
Everybody (everybody)
Yeah (read my blog)
Read my blog (everybody)
Yeah (everybody read my blog)
Everybody (everybody, read my blog)
Read my blog right (everybody)
My blog’s back, alright.

Bloggers, I cannot stress to you enough how important it is to back up your blog. While you’re at it, you should also ensure you have the correct securities in place to prevent against hackers and the like. If you don’t know how to back up your blog or protect yourself, contact your host.

What material item of yours would send you into the depths of despair if you lost it? If you’re a blogger, have you had any similar blog scares?

Oh man, I would have SHIT my pants too. I start feeling sick when my blog is down for 10 minutes, I can’t imagine what that feels like. I do the WordPress backups and I have an old-school system of copying the published version into a word doc too. It’s primitive, but I figure that it’s something…. And this post is a good reminder that I need to catch up!

I have a plug in that backs up my blog but you do have to download that back up occasionally otherwise it’s no good to you if your site dies but good if you just start having recurring issues (which I have lately since updating the SEO plug in! Gah!). Soooo relieved you got it back! And yes, I sang along to the tune too!

What a pain that SEO plug in has been for you! I hope you get it sorted out soon. Yep, that’s where I fell down I think. I had a plugin that backed up too, but I never downloaded the back ups.

I think only other bloggers can comprehend the sheer terror of this scenario. It would be an absolute disaster and in some ways, for the most incomprehensible reasons. (Makes you confront that ‘why blog?’ question mark we always deal with.) Well done for getting it all going again.

I do not have a post ready for today, for the exact same reason. I’d been hacked on Friday, nothing too much seemed wrong. Then on Saturday night it disappeared COMPLETELY I could not even get into the back end. By yesterday, I was also despairing that it was gone forever. I do have it backed up weekly with a free app, but I didn’t know whether it would work. And besides which, I couldn’t get into it to see what was gone. Then my sister had a bright idea to ask our brother for help. Which was a brilliant suggestion because he has a outsourcing centre in the Philippines and one of his techs got it running again in a few hours. But then this morning, I got another email from my host. Saying it was attacked again. My host has done zilch to help, except direct me to a what to do if your blogs been hacked page. (Although the live chat people who did this were friendly enough.) And I am HOPELESS with following techy directions. It took me an hour on Sunday to change my password in my cPanel. So maybe I should consider changing hosts at the end of the year. Who are you with? I’m hoping that Angelo in the Philippines comes to my rescue again. But anyways, hooray for you. Dancing celebratory moves that you’re not gone!

ALRIGHT! So glad you got your blog back, scary times. Much as we moan about them and get sick of them at times, it’d be awful to lose it. Like losing a piece of yourself. On another note – you musta started your blog around the same time as me – Nov 2012.

I lost a heap of photos from 2007/8 years ago, thought I’d saved them and backed them up but it hadn’t worked. Needless to say I was NOT a happy vegemite that day …
