Good Night, Sleep Tight

These days our mornings seem to start like this.

gnst-girls
While I prepare the girls’ breakfast they scrabble over the iPad.

We’ve been a little late to the iPad scene only buying one a couple of weeks ago. It’s all still very new and exciting and a tad addictive.

The morning tug of war usually continues until I ask Miss Four to choose a game she and her sister can both enjoy. She clicks on Good Night, Sleep Tight and hands over the power to Miss Two.

Good Night, Sleep Tight is a very special game to us as my good friend Cara designed and developed it. Impressive right?! She’s pretty amazing at what she does.

Scene1 (2)
When Cara’s little boy started to show an interest in using the iPad and liked the interactivity it offered, she decided to create a game he would enjoy.

Cara designed Good Night, Sleep Tight for the youngest of iPad newbies.

Aimed at babies and toddlers, it takes them on an adventure through four different scenes where they meet a monkey, chicken, cow and fish.

With the tap of a finger, they can paint the night sky with stars, turn the lights in the farmhouse off and on, or make the moon play music as they say good night to each animal.

The artwork is absolutely adorable and the playful sounds entertain my girls to no end.

The cow and the fish scenes are Miss Two’s favourite. She loves making bright red apples fall from the apple tree and hearing the cow moo. She breaks into fits of giggles every time a fish with an hilarious laugh pops out from behind a rock.

Scene4 (4)
Developing and designing this game has been an incredible experience for Cara.

Her husband works long hours and travels quite a bit, plus after her little boy was born she was forced to decide whether to return to her previous job full-time or not. There was no part-time option.

She and her husband made some adjustments at home, so she could have a project of her own and keep her sanity while juggling the demands of being a stay-at-home mum.

The next thing you know, she’s developed an awesome new iPad game for kids. It will be the first of many, I’m sure.

Good on Cara – that’s a big achievement. I might have to talk to her about potentially collaborating with my ideas for kids meditation apps.

What a clever friend indeed!! I would love to know how to do one of these? Is it hard? Expensive? I did a review recently on an app called Nighty Night which is one of the all time favourite apps around and this sounds pretty much the same – but has the colouring in aspect which is great for interactivity. Bravo to your friend for making SAHM work – what a cool friend to have!

Oh wow! Well, I’d be lying if I didn’t get a big smile on my face reading how many times you guys have called me clever! Thanks so much, you guys made my day!

I could talk all day about the whole process. All the creative ideas that lie dormant in my sketchbook, all the technical hurdles I encountered along the way, and all the things I’ve learned generally about iOS app development. Oh, and all the things that my husband (who works in IT) told me I should and shouldn’t do, and then all the things I did anyway, haha!

I really, really loved the whole process – I personally got quite a lot out of it – and each step along the way taught me something new. There are so many aspects to app development and I got to try my hand at all of them – from conceptualising the game, to illustrating, animating (each frame is created by hand), creating and sourcing sound assets, writing code (objective c) by hand and learning about manipulating the physics in the game, to packaging it all up to eventually find its way on to the app store. It’s this final stage – promotion – and getting the word out there about it, I think is the most difficult. My husband did actually warn me about this.

@mamma raj – there are many, many ways to create apps as I’ve discovered – well, mostly through what my husband shows me – he’s a serial new technology adopter. I had 2 goals – I actually (stubbornly) wanted to learn a programming language – after 12 months away from work, I felt like I really wanted to give my brain a bit of a push and learn something new. I also wanted to create something bespoke. I didn’t want to use a framework or toolkit which might limit what I could create – even though I could probably have churned something out quicker. In the end though, what I created was fairly restrained by my own limited programming ability – but, at least I had that control to take it as far as I liked.

So to answer your question – is it hard? I did take the difficult route – there are easier options. But still, I wouldn’t say it’s easy – keep in mind I have quite a technical background in IT/Graphic Design/Web Development, so I was using what knowledge I already have to build on – and I still had LOTS to learn, and put in lots of hours over many months.

In terms of expense, Apple requires you to be a member of their developer program which costs $99/year. I also spent about $45 on sound assets as there were great ones out there that I just couldn’t create myself. Then, the added cost of childcare. But after that, it’s just the cost of my own time.
