Hello 2017

Hellooo!!!! Happy New Year, everyone! I can’t believe it’s almost one month since I’ve written in this space.

Boy, I’ve missed this ‘ol blog and all of you, but you know what? When I sat down to write my first post for 2017 I couldn’t think of what to write. I find when I stop blogging for a while, I lose my rhythm and have trouble channeling my thoughts into one blog post. The stories and words are still there swirling around in my mind and whispering in my ear in the wee hours of the morning. The beginnings of many tales are there, I just need to get out of holiday mode and back into the swing of things.

Not that there’s been much of a holiday, mind you.

I returned to work, to my new-ish job, on 3 January giving me just 10 days holiday. I’m not going to snort at that. It was great and sooooo what we needed.

We didn’t go away, instead we opted for a stay-cay at home (stay-cay is a fancy way of saying we went bloody nowhere) with the plan we’ll have a family getaway later this year to celebrate Dave’s and my fortieth birthdays. Eeek! We’ll just see if we can tighten the belt buckle and get into saving mode.

happy new year
We had a lovely Christmas with the family. Our house is now bursting at the seams with Lego and craft supplies, and I was majorly spoilt with a vintage-style bike. Oh my God, she is beautiful – I’ll tell you all about her in another post though.

We’ve been getting out and about with the kids. There have been plenty of trips to the local pool to cool down. We’ve been frequenting our favourite haunt, South Bank, and we’ve helped the Gallery of Modern Art celebrate its 10th birthday. We’ve been to the movies, had plenty of play dates, played board games, read books, had water fights and generally enjoyed each other’s company.

I’ve had a couple of lie-ins, which is extremely rare for me. I usually can’t bear to be in bed past 6am. I’ve been devouring books since Christmas though and have thoroughly enjoyed curling up in bed or on the couch with a good book.

Dave and I have been getting our money’s worth out of Netflix. We were obsessed with The Crown – oh my God, how good was it?! I found it absolutely fascinating and can’t wait for the next season, but until then we need a new series to get hooked on. Any recommendations?

Dave is in the process of building a climbing wall on the side of our two-storey house. It was such a mammoth effort to get it constructed, but the kids will absolutely love it.

Basically, January has been a chance for us to wind down and prepare for 2017. At the end of a year and beginning of a new one, I usually like to plan for the year ahead. I’m a huuuuge planner. I plan what my goals are across all facets of my life, I think about my intentions and nut out the year ahead.

This year, I don’t have a plan. I haven’t set any goals, intentions or resolutions. I still feel weary from the big change of last year – job-wise – for me. Basically, I want to sit with the new life I carved for myself last year and see how it works for me. Have I made the right decision changing jobs? Have I made the right decision trying to grow a freelance business? Who knows? Only time will tell.

This year, I’m going Dave-style and flying by the seat of my pants. I want to spend time with my family and friends and love more, live more and experience the world around us.

I’m thinking at this point in time, to hell with the rules. Let’s see what life will bring in 2017.

We’ll see what happens . . . will you come along for the ride?

How has your new year kicked off? How have you been? Do you have any resolutions/intentions/goals for 2017?

Linking up today with Kylie Purtell for IBOT.

I find the new year fascinating and how in sync people tend to be. I thought I’d be the only one taking it easy on the resolutions front but everyone I talk to is putting less pressure on themes levels this year. Which is fabulous. Can’t wait to read more about that gorgeous bike!

I’m glad to see taking it easy on resolutions is a bit of a trend this year. As Dave always says, you don’t need a new year to make resolutions and set goals/intentions. You can do it anytime 🙂

I love the idea of flying by the seat of your pants. I don’t have any goals per se because I have commitment issues but I have got stuck into a new list of 101 things to do in 1001 days which for me is less about goals and more about purpose. As for Netflix, I’ve become obsessed with Jane the Virgin – it’s so good and we also really enjoyed The OA which was weird but gripping. I must start The Crown. Your climbing wall looks amaze – Dave is so clever – will you be climbing it too when it’s finished?! Hope 2017 is everything you want it to be… And more!

Oh, I can’t wait to see your new list, Sammie. Sounds awesome. I’ve heard such good things about The OA. We might have to start that next. Jane the Virgin looks funny too. Yes, I’ll give the climbing wall a go when it’s a little cooler. That’s my excuse anyway 🙂

My challenge this year is to transition into a working mum. My maternity leave is nearly finished and I’ll be going back to work full time and on shift work. Juggling Gwen between to shift working parents and daycare/family.
I have registered to do my first ocean swim in Noosa in February. I love to swim but have not done any swimming since before I was pregnant. I see how enthusiastic people get over fun runs and while I have done a few myself, I’ve never been excited by them. This swim however, I’m totally pumped. I haven’t trained and have no intention of training. I’m just going to dive in (see what I did there).
Ooh and I got a new bike too.

Lol. The ocean swim sounds awesome, Sare. I can’t wait to hear all about that. I’m not a runner either, but give me a pool and I’ll swim for days. I can see how you would be nervous about the transition back to work, especially with the shift work. It sounds like you have a great support network around you. I’m sure Gwen will adapt quickly.

I have really been in slow mode too, especially on the blogging front. I also feel like everyone is easing into the new year (and this heat doesn’t help you get going). We have just got Netflix so I am so much in catch-up mode. Plus we’ve been in dance mode with our Miss Yin doing the Queensland Ballet Summer school and a mini-break to Brissy. I think more organic is the way to go in 2017 (not just food, but life, letting it flow). X

I’m still on holidays but I have popped back to write a few very half-arsed posts because I got riled up about something (which thankfully I think I misunderstood) and because I had too much fun at things and wanted other people not to miss it! It’s nicve taking a break but weirdly hard to stay away!

Welcome back!! I have a vintage bike that I love also, just need to find an unhilly place to ride her more often. The crown is amazing! We finished it in a weekend, such was the obsession. Looking forward to following your journey through 2017 xx

Welcome back. Looks like you had a fab stay cay over the break. Fun! I have a bike that I just adore, I just need to ride more. Since starting a job last year I have been super slack at getting on my bike.
Looking forward to connecting in 2017.

Welcome back and Happy New Year Renee! I think sometimes a staycay is the best kind of holiday. Day trips, lie ins, get some of those things done around the house that you normally don’t get time to do etc. I’ve been enjoying Netflix too. Loved The Crown!! Have you watched Grace and Frankie? if not – add it to your list – it’s awesome! Hope you enjoy your new job and have a fantastic year! xo

Happy new year Renee! Even though we have been moving at a pretty slow pace these school holidays, I can’t believe we’re already half way through January! We haven’t got any plans to go away this summer, just taking each day as it comes really. I’m certainly enjoying the break from the routine of school and other activities.

Very simular our nexk of the woods Renee. We stayed home – plan to have a family holiday in March. Exciting! I love the idea of a climbing wall – don’t you have a flying fox too? I’d love one of those for my boys 🙂 Swimming lessons and harvest has finally finished so it’s nice to chill as a family together again. This month has been filled with hens, bucks and this weekend a wedding – love it! We dont have Netflix but I’ve been addicted to OITNB. I’m a late comer, totally hooked. I love shows totally different to what you know. Look forward to hearing about the bike – sell the idea to me (not too hard), my bike is from my 21st bday lol!

Welcome back! Happy New Year. I’m totally winging it blog-wise this year. Posted something just then – who knows when the next one will be? Love that you’ve had a chance to relax and read. I didn’t get much time off with the new-ish job either, but we just booked a family holiday for April so I’ve got that to focus on now. xx

Good for you! I like your no plan attitude. Especially if you made big changes last year with a new job and all sometimes you just need a year to see how they go without more pressure. My husband has the big 40 this year so we are planning Europe! Wohoo!

Sounds like you’ve had a perfect start to the year. And how exciting, 40! We’ve literally just booked a 10 day South Pacific cruise to celebrate my Mum’s 60th in September, maybe you could do a cruise? We’ve never been on one before so I’m super excited! Looking forward to hearing more about how your year unfolds x
