Problogger – love and learnings

Last week I ventured down to Surfers Paradise to attend my first ever blogging conference, Problogger.

For those of you not in the know, Problogger is the mother of all blogging conferences. Actually, it’s like the mother, the father, the godfather, and the whole family. As far as blogging conferences go, this one is epic.

Despite all of this, I’m sad to say that a week out from the conference, I was about an 80 per cent chance of pulling out.

I had worked myself into a nervous frenzy worried about missing the kids, worried about whether people would like me in real life as much as they do online, worried about how my introverted self would cope with two days of networking and worried about spending so much money on my hobby. You name it, I was worried about it.

The afternoon I left for Problogger, I was about a 50 per cent chance of vomiting.

I managed to pull myself together though and man, am I glad I did.

I can only describe sitting in a room among 500 or so bloggers, writers and dreamers as awe-inspiring.

Scanning the room, I could see I was surrounded with people just like me who have a passion, a dream and a desire. People who are hungry for knowledge and eager to challenge themselves. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

I went to this event not knowing if I should be there and left knowing that I was meant to be there.

The experience was inspirational, motivational, educational and exhausting. I even cried when I arrived home.

Anyway, today I want to share with you five things I loved about Problogger, five things I learned about blogging and five things I learned about myself.

Five things I loved about Problogger

I loved that Problogger extraordinaire Darren Rowse is a super cool, down-to-earth dude. He was relatable, generous and very, very inspiring at the conference.

I loved that within seconds of walking into the event venue, I was greeted with massive smiles and warm hugs from The Plumbette and my roomie for the weekend Create Bake Make.

I loved that you can meet someone for the first time in real life and feel like you’ve known them forever.

I loved that my idols Veggie Mama and Life love and hiccups recognised ME and gave ME a hug.

I loved that when You learn something new every day and I returned to the hotel from our cocktail party and heard Funky Town playing, that all we had to was look at each other and know that another drink was in order.

Bonus point: I loved that when I forgot my toothbrush the hotel concierge disappeared into a secret cupboard and gave me a brand new one.

Five things I learned about blogging (For the bloggers out there)

Put your readers first. Find out their needs, their problems, desires, challenges, fears etc.

Give back to your readers.

Rhythm is good for you and your readers.

Put some YOU into your blog.

Surround yourself with the right crowd. Find your blog tribe.

Bonus point: Give up ironing.

Five things I learned about myself

I am braver and stronger than I thought I was.

Time out from the crowds can work wonders for my introverted self.

I am surrounded with love from the blogging community.

My blogging addiction is worse than I expected.

I have a lot of hard work – and lots of fun – ahead of me.

In the coming weeks when I have a chance to digest everything I have learned in the last few days, I would love to share more of this event with you, if you’re keen.

Good on you Renee! I would be nervous too prior to an event like this but sounds like you got SO much out of it so it was all worth it and I bet you didn’t mind a bit of break from mummy duties either?

I would love to meet bloggers face to face. How awesome some of the famous bloggers recognised you and approached you! I’d be chuffed too.

Thanks for sharing these tips. I’ve taken note πŸ™‚ xx

I am sad I couldn’t go but I couldn’t miss my daughters fourth birthday. I admire your bravery. Nothing worse than walking into a room of people you don’t know (well kind of). You were super brave and certainly got a great pay off well done!

It was hardest for me to leave my dogs so I understand why you’d have reservations leaving your kids Renee. I think next year they should have an introverts’ room. It was lovely meeting you and all the lovely bloggers. I think that was my favourite part. Isn’t Veggie Mama stunning?

I can’t believe how little I saw of you down there! It was so busy – and I didn’t see Lauren at all.

Good thing we can have local catch ups.

And I agree PB was overwhelming but also inspiring and a wonderful way to connect with people we have only ever communicated with online. My head is buzzing with ideas and I am exhausted. Looking forward to seeing what everyone does next. xx

Aww Renee, if I’d known how anxious you were beforehand I could have given you a prep talk but from the sounds of it you’re stronger than you think. Your face was always one of my favourites to see amongst the crowd. I couldn’t not walk past you and give you a hug. I loved our dm on Thursday arvo with Lauren at the Stingray bar. It was just like we were talking to friends because we read each other’s blogs. I’m already excited for next year. Have a great week gorgeous. I know you will achieve your dreams. I believe in you. I found it quite hard to have meaningful and long conversations with people because I was trying to catch up and met so many people, this meant I didn’t get to have big chats with too many people. But I did enjoy, get some great inspiration and I have A LOT of homework to do. x

I loved meeting you Renee! Thanks for being a friendly face, as I said on my blog today my introvert was overwhelmed and chatting to you and some of the other familiar bloggers was such a comfort. You have summed it up all so well. I came away with a lot of the same points, and yes, lots of work to do! I’d love to read more of what you got out of it, it will be a good reminder and it’s so good hearing it from someone else’s perspective!

Totally keen Renee! Bring it on! I went to the Digital Parent’s Conference in 2013 and it was awesome, I learnt so much more than I expected to. It’s hard to digest it, and even now I go back to my notebook to re-read the notes that I took and see how I’m going from the goals I set for myself after that conference.

So glad to hear you had an awesome time (knew you would!) and I hope you’re gonna go next year because you are on my hit list of people to meet offline!
