Spending time – Our Kiwi holiday

familyholHere we sit on a golden hill, the grass dancing around us in the blustery wind.

Here we sit on our first overseas holiday as a family. The first chance we’ve had to spend extended quality time with each other in, well, in forever.

We have not a care in the world. Our busy lives are on hold, our worries are distant.

We have waited for this holiday for what feels like an eternity. We have worked hard for it. We have needed it. A break from routine, a break from the screen.

Here we sit blissfully aware that it is our time to bond as a family, to enjoy each other, to be.

Mmountains
For 11 days, we reveled in the wonder of New Zealand’s south island – Dave’s homeland.

We drank in the beauty of the landscape surrounding us – aqua lakes rippling below snow-capped mountains, forests with trees that touch the sky, eerily low lying clouds which the sun peeked through to cast a magical, almost other worldly, light over everything.

For 11 days, we spent quality time with not only our little family, but Dave’s brother’s family.

Four little cousins had the chance to really play with and get to know each other for the first time. There was giggling and squealing and noise and craziness … and mummies reaching for wine πŸ˜‰

For 11 days, all eight of us lived together in a confined space. While this would drive some crazy, we cherished the opportunity to get to know each other a little better. It was comfortable, natural, and the most fun we’ve had in a while.

Curly-locks and Smiley thrived in their rural surroundings.

curlylake

Curly-locks started the holiday off on a high fulfilling her dream of eating a lollipop on a plane πŸ™‚ and then shortly after seeing a farmer IRL πŸ˜‰ For her though, nothing could top sleeping in a bunk bed πŸ™‚ She truly came out of her shell on this trip and it was beautiful to watch.

smiley-leaves

We definitely witnessed Smiley grow on this trip also. She has quickly become little Miss Independent wanting to use her new found legs at every opportunity. She delighted in toddling around to investigate her new surroundings and explore different textures. She learned one or two new words almost every day. All we need to do now is teach her that all those cows she kept calling out to and pointing at were actually sheep πŸ™‚

As for Dave and I, we are more loved up than ever – with our little family and with each other.

goldenhill

There we sat on that golden hill, making memories, filling our hearts, and promising ourselves it won’t be as long between holidays again.

When was your last family holiday? How was it?

Linking up today with the very awesome Jess for I Blog on Tuesday!

That sounds wonderful! My husband keeps telling me we should go to New Zealand:) I can relate to the misnamed animals. My 20 month old is convinced that every farm animal is called “sheep”:)

So so lovely, Renee. We went on our first family holiday when I was about 20ish? weeks pregnant with Tiny. It was absolutely everything our little family of three needed. Family time – quality time – free from distraction and free to just… be. It is a gift. Thrilled you and yours had this opportunity. X

Dadabs is a rugged outdoors man at heart (although the ruggedness is fading with middle age). He would love Kiwi land and I really want to take the family over there. The problem – dislodging him from his business is more difficult than nuclear fusion at times. Anyhow its lovely that you guys had just a great time.

I am longing for time like this with mine. We’re all so highly strung out from busy schedules and technology. It’s important to free yourself of such things and just connect in isn’t it? So glad that you gave yourselves that time.
NZ is such a gorgeous country to visit. We loved it when we went back in 2008. We’ve always longed to go back there with our family. It will happen. We need an amazingly beautiful family photo just like yours πŸ™‚ xx

Sounds like an amazing time away! I am dying to check out the South Island and this has only reaffirmed my desire to do it! Our last family holiday was a mini-break further down the coast from where we live, in a cabin by the lake and it was fantastic. Spending that kind of time together, especially as it happened to occur just before I fell pregnant, was much needed. I almost think we knew that it might be our last holiday as a family of three before the arrival of number four. I think I enjoy the ‘disconnect’ aspect of it all the most. It’s hard for me sometimes to go offline and unhook myself from social media and being somewhere slightly isolated seems to help the transition and allow me to slowly become more present

It was fab and probably will be the last big plane travelling trip for a while with number 3 due in August.
