I don’t know about you, but I have packed on the pounds this winter.
My morning walks went out the window when it became too dark and cold and even with a heated pool five minutes away, I just haven’t been in the mood.
All I’ve been in the mood for is hot chips, potato bake, pasta, and bagels with cream cheese.
I’ve been telling myself there’s nothing wrong with a little extra padding in the cooler months, but with spring on the way and me not feeling comfortable in my own skin, I know it’s time to put down the fork and get moving.
Now, let me tell it to you straight.
I despise exercise.
Well, most forms of exercise anyway.
The other issue is Dave gets home late four out of five nights a week leaving me very little opportunity to exercise kid-free.
I was struggling to work out what I could do to shift this extra padding, considering my circumstances, when out of the blue the perfect idea struck me.
When my sister and I were growing up, we went through a phase where we were into exercise BIG time.
I won’t go into the story about our competition to see who could do the most sit ups before the Take That concert, which left us virtually unable to stand up straight for days, I’ll tell you about Aerobics Oz Style instead.
We used to live for that show waking up at the crack of dawn to work out with June, Effie and the gang.
Back then exercise was fun and something we could do in our lounge room in front of the TV. With this in mind, I decided to hop onto You Tube and search for exercise videos similar to Aerobics Oz Style. I was after something that combined aerobics, dance and some awesome tunes.
And let me tell you I have found some doozies. I’ve been experimenting with everything from Zumba to Hip Hop to Bollywood.
All this dancing has taken me back to the days where exercising was fun and not a chore.
Just quietly, I’m a bit of a killer dancer.
People call me the white Beyonce, I bring it like Sasha Fierce.
Ahh, if only. While I love dancing, I almost certainly look like this.
You know what? It doesn’t matter what I look like because I’m by myself in my own lounge room and am exercising again. Yay!
If you’re keen to get your dance on and get back on the exercise bandwagon before bikini season, then check out these videos I’ve struck gold with.
- Latin dance fitness class
This is an approximately 30 minute Zumba-like routine of a medium level intensity. The moves are fairly basic and it’s nothing too strenuous. It has a good chill down, but no warm up. The instructor is easy to watch, plus the people in the video aren’t perfectly styled and toned. It’s a mixture of shapes, sizes and ages and each and every one of them is bringing it.
- Pump it up – the ultimate dance workout
This workout is over one hour long, is intense, high impact, full of pelvic thrusting and awesome dance music. What I like about this video is that it includes a warm up and chill down. The instructor, Deanne Berry of Call on me fame, is easy to follow and she explains everything very well. Everyone in the video is super buff which may or may not put some off. The guy in the green shorts definitely brings an element of creepiness into the routine. If you like dancing, then this one would be good for you.
- Popsugar fitness
Popsugar is a You Tube channel loaded with exercise routines. As I scanned through the list of exercise videos titled Victoria’s Secret model workout, the Look good naked barre workout and Bikini belly boot camp, I knew I’d found my home. I’ve been slowly working my way through these videos with the Burn calories with this dance party workout, the 2Fly Hip Hop workout and the Bombay Jam Bollywood dance workout being my favourites. Be warned there is no warm up or chill down with most of these routines. They can start very high impact, so you need to do your own stretches before and after. Part of the appeal for me with Popsugar is an onscreen clock which counts down as you work through your routine. I also like that there are taster videos around 10 minutes each. If you like a particular routine, you are guided to a specific channel for more.
So, what do you think? Are you going to give any of them a crack? Please don’t let my selfie after I did the Pump it up workout put you off …
