A letter to my four year old

Dear Smiley

Happy fourth birthday, my little angel!

We’ve been counting down for what seems like forever for your fourth birthday and party.

The Tinkerbell cake is ready and the party bags are packed. Even though we had to cancel the jumping castle thanks to your broken collar bone, today we plan to give you the celebration of all celebrations to see that smile on your dial again.

Your strength and bravery overwhelmed me earlier this week when you straddled me in the emergency room of the children’s hospital, your face warm with tears burrowing into my chest.

Here we were at the hospital again, where memories of your last visit were still fresh. I knew you were scared, little lamb. Your big brown eyes told a sad story. Despite the pain, you remained calm and resolute.

Your Daddy and I are so very proud of you for being so brave. I know you were in terrible pain and I know lying on the table for your x-ray without being able to hold Mummy’s hand was scary. Your inner strength and determination saw you through, just as it has done your whole life.

Each weekend, you amaze us with your rock climbing skills and your eagerness to climb higher and higher, all the while singing ‘I’m the King of the Castle’. You have a daredevil streak in you, that’s for sure. Zipping down daddy’s homemade flying fox is one of your favourite weekend activities.

You’re a happy-go-lucky little love. Your chipmunk voice is always animated and full of life as you make up wildly imaginative games with your Barbies and dolls. You happily entertain yourself, but love playing babies and mummies with your big sister too.

You can often be found wobbling about the house in your high heels and a handbag full of accessories on your arm. You have a great sense of style, always wanting to choose your own outfit and find earrings for me to wear. You’re quite vocal about whether you like or dislike what I’m wearing.

You’ve all of a sudden fallen in love with colouring-in and crafting, proudly signing your name on each creation you make. Your Jake and the Neverland Pirates colouring book is now the first thing you rush to every morning.

You are sweet, happy, love a good tickle and will always be my littlest baby. We are so lucky to have such a spirited, fun-loving character like you in our lives.

Happiest of happy birthdays, my little darling.

Love Mummy
