A letter to my seven-year-old

To my darling seven-year-old

We awoke at the same time on your seventh birthday.

With the late sunrise and block-out blinds in New Zealand, it was easy to sleep in.

As we ran into each other on our way to the bathroom, you gave me a smile that made my heart melt.

You nestled into me for a birthday cuddle as we caught a glimpse of a stunning sunrise outside. We opened the blinds to reveal the morning sky being painted pink and purple over snow-capped mountains. Your favourite colours – what a great way to kick off your birthday celebrations!

The plan for your birthday – a much talked about event – was to go ice skating at Lake Tekapo. You were itching to get there as soon as you woke up, but with Daddy stopping at every bend to take photos of the beautiful scenery, it seemed to take an eternity to get to the open air rink.

As soon as I fastened your skates and helmet, you stepped boldly onto the ice. It was only your third time ice skating, but you were brimming with happiness and confidence. Nothing could stop you.

A short year ago, you wouldn’t have been brave enough to do this. It’s amazing what a difference a year can make.

You have started to come into your own, my little love. You’re happy, bubbly, very chatty, have a curious mind and are a sensitive and nurturing soul.

You’ve formed a strong network of friends at school. I love to hear you talking about them and sharing happy stories of what games you get up to. It makes me unbelievably happy to know that our once shy little girl has found her place at school.

You are still crazy about dancing, which reminds me we need to buy you new tap shoes. Argh! You are growing too fast! You and your sister love nothing more than rocking out to your current faves Taylor ‘Smith’, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry. Meanwhile, you and I love burning up the living room floor to Just Dance. When we started the Watch me routine together, I knew instantly you were my little soul sister on the dance floor.

Now watch me whip
Watch me nae nae
Now watch me whip whip
Watch me nae nae
Ooh watch me, watch me
Ooh watch me, watch me
Ooh watch me, watch me
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

At swimming each week, you are getting stronger and more confident. Lap after lap you swim without a complaint. And then there’s the rock climbing. Daddy loves to push you out of your comfort zone more than you’d like. You resist at first, but then become filled with pride when you realise just how brave and strong you are.

You are devouring books at the moment knocking off an Ella and Olivia or Billie B. Brown in the blink of an eye. I love it when you take yourself into your bedroom for some quiet time reading and I love it even more when you take the pen and papers from underneath your bed after I’ve tucked you in and write until you fall asleep.

You’re almost too big to fit in my lap these days, but it doesn’t stop me from wanting to wrap you up in my arms and hold you.

Your daddy and sister and I are so grateful to have you in our lives. Thank you for being you and for brightening our each and every day.

Happy (belated) birthday, Monkey. We love you.

Love Mummy xx
