I shared a special moment with Curly-locks today. It was fleeting, yet its tenderness has left me reliving it all afternoon.
We spent the morning doing one of our favourite activities, baking. Chocolate chip cookies were on the menu. Curly-locks loves baking cookies because she can get her hands dirty kneading the dough. As she kneaded, we sang our made up cooking song, ‘Mix, mix the bowl’ and I let her pick choc chips out of the dough to nibble on before I put the cookies into the oven.
While I tidied up the kitchen, Curly-locks leaned against the couch and watched me. She was smiling, content. She then closed her eyes, sighed and whispered, ‘I love you, Mummy.’
It was such a simple thing and over so quickly, yet I feel it will be with me for some time. I felt my heart swell. It was in the way she looked at me, the tone of her words. It was the look of bliss on her face.
Will she remember this? Not likely, but I certainly will.
With all the hard work that comes with motherhood – the sleepless nights, tantrums, food battles – there are the moments that leave impressions on your heart and make you forget all the hard stuff. Moments that make you feel so damn lucky to be a mum.
